Genesis Owusu And Cub Sport Emerge As Winners At 2024 AIR Awards

Australia holds the AIR Awards every year to celebrate its independent music sector. The 2024 AIR Awards saw Jem Cassar-Daley, Cub Sport and Genesis Owusu join the winner’s circle.

Owusu won the silver this time, something he has done frequently in the last few years. He nabbed the award for STRUGGLER, as the best independent hip-hop album.

This was his sophomore LP that managed to reach the ARIA top 10 last year.

Owusu’s Win

It was not just Owusu who enjoyed the glory on this occasion. His support network also had a share. The Ourness, The Annex, and AWAL were given the independent marketing team of the year AIR Award.

Likewise, the sought-after independent label of the year award also went to Andrew Klippel’s Ourness. In 2023, STRUGGLER scored a hat trick at the ARIA Award.

It marked an excellent run of form for the artist, who was raised in Canberra. Some of the other awards the artist has in his collection include the J Award for Australian album of the year and an APRA Award.

He also participated in and landed the first prize in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. The Australian Music Prize is also part of his collection.

More Winners

The 2024 AIR Awards were held in Adelaide Brisbane at the Queens Theatre on August 1st, Thursday. Cub sport won two prizes at the said awards.

The electronic pop outfit won the Independent Music Video of the Year award, thanks to ‘Keep Me Safe’.

Jesus At The Gay Bar, their ARIA No. 1 Album, helped them land the independent dance or electronica album award.

There were many other winners. This included RVG, as their album Brain Worms won the independent Album of the Year prize.

Royel Otis was given the Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year award. The song ‘King of Disappointment’ helped Jem Casser-Daley win the Independent Song of the Year award.

The AIR Awards

The AIR Awards have entered their 18th year and celebrate the best and brightest from the independent music community in Australia.

The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) is responsible for organizing the AIR Awards. Two new categories were introduced in this year’s edition.

The two categories were for the best independent producer and the best independent music video. In addition, there was also an international development in the awards.

AIR announced during the ceremony that it had received funding for holding its Awards for two years, along with the Indie-Con Australia conference that would be held in Adelaide.

It also announced that along with its other events in 2025, it would also hold the Australian edition of the A2IM’s Indie-Week conference.

The general manager of A2IM, Lisa Hresko said that they were looking forward to holding their first-ever international event in Adelaide.

She said that the event would serve as a central hub for independent music, bringing industry leaders together to share ideas that will shape the future and take music forward.
